Sabonis, who is only now eighteen years old, was recruited last year, in 2014, by Gonzaga University, a small school with a big time college basketball program that is based in the state of Washington. In his freshman year, Sabonis, who is left-handed, was a scoring force coming “off the bench.”
At 6’10” tall, he was able to provide “instant offense” and, in fact, average 9.5 points per game while pulling down 5.4 rebounds per game. His solid production came in limited playing time, making it even more noteworthy.
Domantas Sabonis actually played basketball in Spain for a professional team, Unicaja Malaga, at age sixteen. He showed excellent basketball skills and was able to be recruited by Coach Mark Few of Gonzaga University because he never signed a professional contract.
His stellar play last season was recognized and Sabonis was selected to the All-Freshman Team prior to the start of the current season. He has also been named to the Second Team All-ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference).
His young age, professional pedigree and improving skills mark Sabonis as a player to be watched. He should be better in all aspects of his game as the new season unfolds and moves along.
The truth is that Gonzaga University will begin the new 2015-2016 Season with a national ranking that places it in the Top Ten. Thanks to the play of Domantas Sabonis and others, the high ranking is deserved. In truth, it seems likely that this well-coached squad will once again provide top level performances in the games it plays at home and on the road.
Gonzaga University has morphed over the past several years into a top tier basketball program. Recruits like Domantas Sabonis and others help to keep this basketball program in “elite” status. And Domantas Sabonis, still a teenager and growing, is certain to produce on offense and defense in every game he plays this year, even if his playing time never rises above twenty minutes per game.
Given his last name, his basketball DNA and his steady improvement “on the basketball hardwood,” this young player seems destined to follow in the footsteps of his famous father and play professionally in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
It probably won’t happen this year or even next, but Domantas Sabonis seems likely to have the skills necessary to become a competent and capable professional basketball player. His height makes him an attractive option to most professional teams.
